Tourist is the pseudonym of William Phillips. Having caused a stir in the independent music scene, he debuted under the name Tourist with the release of an eponymous EP in 2012. The sunny melodies, brimming with synthesizers and strongly inspired in the 80s were reminiscent of a certain chillwave language. Yet, the work that followed would take a more sombre and poignant tone. The EP Tonight, released in 2013, brought Tourist’s sound closer to UK garage and house music, containing more urgent melodies. Moving between risk and familiarity, Tourist continued to consolidate his artistic language with the next releases. U (2016), Everyday (2019) and Wild (2019) showed an artist making full use of his ability and set on making electronic music that went beyond the dance appeal. His latest album, released in 2022, comes following a period of mourning for the death of a friend during the pandemic. Despite the circumstances, this is not a sombre record – the melancholic tone tempered by moments of hope, like the sound of his daughter’s heartbeat, born in December 2020. The song “Your Love” sums up the album’s spirit and will certainly be one of the most anticipated by the Portuguese audience on 16th July on Super Bock Super Rock’s Somersby stage.
