Sampa the Great

Sampa The Great is an excellent example of what socially conscious music is in the 21st century: a reflection of a globalised world with different struggles and a variety of accents and sensitivities. Sampa Tembo was born in Zambia and was brought up in Botswana. She fell in love with hip hop early on, thanks to hits like 2Pac’s “Changes”. Her passion for hip hop grew further and when she moved to Australia, she began to be noticed in Sydney’s hip hop scene, this time as an adult. In 2015, The Great Mixtape, her first work, caused a buzz around this artist whose talent continued to grow, amassing an increasing number of followers. Sampa the Great then had the opportunity to share the stage with artists such as Kendrick Lamar, Hiatus Kaiyote, Ibeyi and Little Simz. After releasing her second mixtape, Birds and BEE9, her debut album came in 2019. The Return is a series of songs focused on questions of identity and her awareness of her musical heritage. This is an artist engaged in challenging herself through the written word and the visual arts. In 2022, she continued to push her limits with As Above, So Below, featuring Denzel Curry, Kojey Radical, Joey Bada$$ and Angélique Kidjo. Her music speaks of her origins, hip hop tradition, poetic ramblings both energetic and delicate, music as an instrument of the struggle, with jazz and soul touches. In short, Sampa de Great is a must for anyone who enjoys authentic music. She’ll be on Stage 2 of Super Bock Super Rock on 14th July.
